Broadband data speed test

What is data speed?

Data is information which could be in the form of a document, spreadsheet, image or some combination of these forms.
Data speed refers to how quickly it takes for the information you have requested to be displayed on your computer screen.

Australian Broadband Guarantee data speed

Your internet service provider (ISP) is obliged to provide you with a broadband service plan that meets the minimum requirements of a Threshold Service as defined under the Australian Broadband Guarantee Guidelines (i.e. a peak download/upload data speed of at least 512/128 Kbps and at least 3GB per month usage allowance with no restrictions within these limits on downloads or uploads or on usage time or peak/off peak limitations). As an Australian Broadband Guarantee customer, you are entitled to a minimum speed of data as well as a monthly data usage allowance as part of your broadband service plan; your ISP is also required to make available a Value Added service as defined under the Australian Broadband Guarantee Guidelines. Your ISP must comply with that minimum data speed obligation.

Under the Australian Broadband Guarantee Guidelines, your data speed experience must be at least 60% of the nominal peak speed of your broadband service plan, both download and upload, and this must be experienced at least 75% of the time. For example, if your broadband service plan is 512/128 Kbps, a pass result is obtained if your data speed is 307.2/76.8 Kbps or better.

What is a data speed test?

This is an approved technical method of measuring how quickly your data is delivered through the network of your ISP. The test is a free service offered by the Department for eligible consumers connected under Australian Government subsidy programs.

The data speed testing facility is independently hosted and used to verify the compliance of registered ISPs with their service-level obligations under the Australian Broadband Guarantee program.
